15 -19 September
2025

Ceará Events Center
Fortaleza - Ceará
Brazil

The International Conferences on Climate and Development (ICID) were developed to strengthen discussions on the sustainable development of global drylands.

The Conference

3rd International Conference on Climate and Development in Semi-Arid Regions – ICID III

In light of Brazil's decision to host the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP 30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the city of Belém, state of Pará, from November 10 to 21, 2025, and considering the disproportionate impact of climate change on arid, semi-arid, and sub-humid regions of the globe, a group of institutions from Brazil and other countries decided to organize the 3rd International Conference on Climate and Development in Arid, Semi-Arid, and Dry Sub-Humid Regions (ICID III). The conference aims to strengthen and expand discussions on the impacts of climate change on the sustainable development of global drylands within the framework of COP 30 of the UNFCCC.

The Third Conference will focus on climate, climate change, and sustainable development issues in dry regions globally. Papers may address semi-arid or dry regions as a whole, or focus on specific regions.

The Third Conference will cover the following topics:

  • Aspects of the climate in dry regions of the planet;
  • Impacts of climate variations (including climate change) on dry regions (social, economic, and environmental impacts);
  • How to adapt to current climate conditions and inevitable climate change (adaptation);
  • What are de Impacts of climate change in semi-arid regions and how can these regions contribute to water resources, food security and renewable energy;
  • How to contribute to reducing climate change (mitigation);
  • How to promote sustainable development in dry regions.

Both theoretical proposals and case study-based proposals may be included.

Objectives

Influence the COP 30 agenda by reinforcing discussions about the impacts of climate change on the development of global drylands.
Provide scientific and technical input to ensure robust participation from national delegates of countries with dry regions at COP 30.
Update knowledge on topics affecting the sustainable development of drylands since the 1st ICID in 1992 and the 2nd ICID in 2010.
Influence international, national, and local public policies focused on sustainable development and climate adaptation for drylands.
Produce a series of publications to disseminate reliable scientific and academic knowledge, supporting decision-making on strategic issues for the sustainable development of drylands, including climate, vulnerability, impacts, adaptation, mitigation, sustainability strategies, and population, resources, and development.

Previous Conferences

1992

The First ICID

The 1st ICID took place in 1992, as a preparatory event for the United Nations Summit on Environment and Development (UNESCO, or Rio 92).

The documents produced at this First Conference served as instruments for the African Group to advocate for the creation of the United Nations Framework Convention to Combat Desertification and Mitigate the Effects of Drought (UNCCD).

2010

The Second ICID

The 2nd ICID, organized in 2010, was a preparatory event for the 2nd United Nations Summit on Environment and Development (Rio+20), and mobilized all arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions of the globe, raising discussions on socioeconomic and environmental problems that affected the sustainability of the development of global drylands.

In this process of international mobilization aimed at strengthening the agenda of discussions on the sustainable development of global drylands within the scope of Rio+20, two other ICID Conferences deserve to be highlighted: (i) ICID África, held in Niamey/Niger, on October 24 and 25, 2011; and, (ii) ICID Latin America, held from September 25 to 28, 2011, in the city of Mendoza/Argentina.

It must have an introduction, objective, methodology, results and final considerations. Abstracts that exceed this limit or are shorter may still be accepted at the discretion of the organizing committee.

Topics of Interest

Topics of interest include climate, impacts, adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable development. Presentations can address dry regions globally or focus on specific regions.

Selection Criteria for Papers and Poster Sessions

Submissions will be selected by the Scientific Committee, with a total of 40 chosen for plenary sessions.

Poster sessions will be accepted in the state in which they are submitted, depending on available space (poster sessions will take place throughout the conference, Monday through Wednesday).
